The Tortoise or the Hare?

This question is from Eileen, who asks a very important question for writers seeking publication.

Sorry about the interruption midway through. I have a black lab and his hair gets everywhere. Even my lips!

Remember, people, it was the tortoise who beat the hare.

If you have a question you’d like me to answer via vlog, please send them my way (either in the comments section or in an email). If you missed my previous vlogs and want to take a look, you can find them on my youtube channel.

Let’s Talk: Are you the tortoise or the hare? Or does it depend on the situation?removetweetmeme

I'm so impressed with your VLOGs! I want to try that!

As you're approaching your debut release has your blog increased in popularity? How much time do you spend on social media or do you put your promotion time elsewhere?

Great encouragement. I'm on submission with my agent right now, and also a mom, wife, etc. etc. I feel like I never have enough time to write like I "need" to be doing. Thank you!

You know why I love your vlogs? 'Cause I kinda feel like we're sitting together having bagels. Kinda.

When I first began writing, I was a hare. Then I learned about the "rules," marketability issues, and such and became more of a tortoise. The result is that my first drafts are pretty tight and clean, whereas in my hare days they needed LOTS of work.

We have two long-haired cats and deal with fur issues daily. Everyone at church is used to seeing my hubby and me doing the lint brush thing in the parking lot on Sunday morning. =)

So glad I'm not alone in my dog hair shedding problem. It seriously gets everywhere!

I've got two dogs, so I know how that is…

Great vlog. Heavy on the steady. Love it. I do work full time. Somtimes its seems very difficult, but I am steady and working through it.

The steady is what I'm lacking right now. Hoping to change that.

    Thanks, Katie!!

I'm actually a mix. Family at times demands that I be the tortoise, but when things are running smoothly I'm a hare. Some day I believe I'll be more hare than tortoise, but for now while my girls are growing and discovering what they're supposed to do in this life I'm comfortable with mixing it up. I don't want to regret these parenting years at all.

I started laughing just when I read your dog hair explanation, before I even watched it! Thanks for being you. πŸ™‚

Great advice, Katie! I've found just entering "agent land" has made the work more intense with actual deadlines instead of self-imposed deadlines. And it sounds like it gets even more intense once we enter "published land". Establishing routines early on is sooo important, even if we can't devote the amount of time we'd like to.

    Have a great weekend! πŸ™‚

Yeah, Heather – that was because I already made a few mistakes before and I was sick of recording! I could never be an actress! I might be a perfectionist when it comes to my writing, but when it comes to the camera, I tend to think, "Eh, it's good enough."

I love that you didn't feel the need to start the video over when you got the hair stuck on you lip!!

I think I used to rush things, but the publishing industry and each individual's journey is going to go as fast as it's going to go. Because we can't rush the process, I think I learned to slow down and truly learn and appreciate each step along the way in order to be the best that I can be.

There are still days when I want to go full steam ahead, though.

At times, I feel like the tortoise but I'd rather do things right then rush it. πŸ™‚
