You know that conference? The one that’s always been this far-away thing. The one that I’ve been thinking about for the past seven months. The one I’ve been using as this time-marker for when I’ll start querying agents and editors. Yea, that one. Umm…it’s this Thursday. How did that happen?
What has me excited:
– Meeting so many of my cyber friends. Putting voices and faces and mannerisms to so many fellow writers who share pieces of themselves on their blogs every week.
– The energy, excitement, and creativity that’s bound to come with so many writers, agents, and editors gathering in the same room!
– Growing as a writer.
What has me nervous:
– So tell me, what’s your book about?
Question to Ponder: So tell me, what’s your book about?
Seriously. Let’s practice. Give me your pitch in the comment section. Don’t look anything up. Don’t take a long time. Just write what would come out of your mouth if an agent/editor/author were to ask you this question right now.
Katie, I'm looking forwward to hearing about how your conference goes. Good luck! I haven't practiced my pitch, all though my conference is on Saturday. So my elevator pitch is easy: I handicapped TinkerBell and made her a Warrior. My longer pitch: My young adult story follows a teenage fairy caught in the middle of a war as she discovers she has a handicap punishable by death.
It might need a bit of work.
Oh, I love conferences! I always walk away inspired. Have a blast! π
Thanks, Heather!
I love the pitches everybody!! Keep 'em coming! And thanks for sharing!
Tabitha – that would definitely intrigue me.
Marybeth – I can't wait to share!!
Eileen – I like that! It's not stinky in the slightest!! You know, funny thing – but my WIP is about a widow trying to keep her husband's memory alive. It's the sequel to my last ms. I like your use of the word weasel. π
Kristen – I can't wait to share the stories! I'm looking forward to the fellowship and the learning!
Carrie – sounds interesting. I like the graphic artist career. It's unique. π
Candee – that sounds really fun! I'd love to read it! ARe you nervous about the banquet, or feeling happy whatever the outcome?
Jessica – you know I love yours. The dead son at the end really kicks it into high gear. Like I said – sets it apart from similar storylines! Well done! Only one suggestion: when you say "kept him a secret", I'd change that to "kept the baby a secret". Just adds some extra clarification. π
Thanks Cindy! I can't wait to share some stories when I return. π
Karen – it's the American Christian Fiction Writers annual conference. A lot of people refer to it as ACFW conference.
T. Anne – I so much appreciate the prayers!! Thanks, girl!
Thanks, Jill! I can't wait to share about it when I get back. π
Thanks, Elana! How's your school year going so far?
I, too, hope everyone has a great time at conference!
Well, since I have my query letter memorized, that wouldn't be fair, would it? LOL!
But have a great conference, learn lots and I hope to read all about it here. π
Oh Katie!! You're going to have an amazing time! I can't wait to hear about it when you get back–best wishes!!
I'm not going so my pitch isn't polished. But I'm PRAYING so hard for you and all of my blogging buddies! I cannot wait to hear the good news. Our God is big and He has a wonderful plan for you. =)
What conference is everyone talking about? Just curious.
karen
Oh, Katie, that's a tough one. I am soooo excited to hear all about the conferences from everyone who is going. By the way, I like your pictures on the side–Brogan is sooo cute!
Ooh, love reading the pitches! π I know, I can't believe it's so close too! I swear I don't know if I'm more nervous or more excited! LOL And I'm interested in seeing everyone too!
You already saw my pitch, but I'll practice again. *gulp*
After being left at the altar, a businessman comes back to his hometown years later and discovers his ex-fiance had his baby and kept him a secret, and now his son is dead.
This ones more long-winded. I actually don't have anything memorized, just an idea of what I'll say. Hope that works. *crossing fingers when maybe I should be praying?*
I can use all the practice I can get!
Already known for hot coffee, good food, and friendly service, what happens when a diner starts serving up love?
(Then, if they want more …)
It's a year of transition but more than management is changing, especially in the lives of three weekday waitresses. Serving Up Love is a 2009 Genesis Finalist for women's fiction.
Ugh, the one-liner. I actually really like my query now, but I *hate* the one-liner.
My book is a smart chick lit novel about a 26-year-old graphic artist who discovers she is accidentally pregnant.
Have fun!!!
Hi, Katie!
I can't wait to hear your stories about the conference! I hope it's a great time for all of you!
Thanks for the practice, Katie!
A widow is torn between keeping the memories of her late husband alive while struggling to accept that she must move on when a missionary weasles his way into her family's life.
That was so hard to come up with and still it stinks!! What am I going to do?
How exciting! I can't wait to hear about it all from all of you girls!!!
Tough one Katie. And I get no thinking time? None? Okay, well I would say my memoir is about listening to the voice of pain and what it has to tell us. I'd elaborate of course, but that is where I'd start. π
