Praying Scripture

Lately, I’ve been hunting for those bits of scripture that translate directly into prayers.

Because sometimes I can’t find the right words.

For me. For others.

And there’s something really powerful about kneeling down and making God’s Word the cry of our hearts.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
~Psalm 51:10

Search me, O God, and know my heart. Test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you and lead me along the path of everlasting life.
~Psalm 139:23-24

May he grant your hearts desires and make all your plans succeed. May we shout for joy when we hear of your victory and raise a victory banner in the name of our God. May the Lord answer all your prayers.
~Psalm 20:4-5

Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you.
~Psalm 25:4-5

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.
~Numbers 6:24-26 (I love praying this one over my readers)

As you can see, I’m a fan of praying the psalms.

Let’s Talk: Please share scripture that you love to pray! I’d love to add them to my journal for future use.

Almost every morning I pray the fruit of the spirit prayer-Galatians 5:22-23. I say, “Lord, through Your Holy Spirit give me Your love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” I have felt such a difference since I started doing that.

Also, whenever I get anxious I sometimes pray what I consider my life verse. John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.” It helps me remember the joyful life God has called us to. Joy that comes out of what He did, not our circumstances here.

    Great post, Katie!

  3. I’m constantly in awe of Scripture, Katie. Just when I think I’ve found the perfect verse (my life verse), I find another … and then another. God’s Word is infinitely satisfying and empowering. I often quote to myself Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; think about Him in all your ways, and He will guide you on the right paths.”

  4. I love the Psalms. I read a passage or two every night. Thanks for sharing these. =)

  5. Is 40:28-31

I prayed this over a friend who is very ill, and for his wife who struggles seeing him in constant pain. I could say more, but let’s just leave it at that.

A giant RESOUNDING Amen! Those are such powerful verses!!

  6. I pray these verses for my children:

Colossians 1:9-12 “For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light.”

It always feels a little lofty, but I really do want these things for my children, especially now as they are venturing out on their own.

    Blessings,
    Becky

Oh my goodness – this is such an amazing prayer to pray over your children. Thanks for sharing, Becky! I’m totally going to use it.

  7. Wonderful scriptures and prayers! Thank you for sharing.

What God has placed on my heart is 2 chron 7:14, “If my people will humble themselves and pray….Then will I hear….”

This is speaking to the church, if WE will humble ourselves and pray and so on, THEN He will hear and answer.

We need revival in this country. I can’t control what other Christians do, but I am responsible for what I do. I must seek God first!

  8. Oh, Katie, how I love praying Scripture! What a wonderful post to chime in on today. I’ve added a few of yours to my list! My favorite Scripture to pray (changing the pronouns to me/I) comes from Job 11:13-18:

“Yet if I devote my heart to Him and stretch out my hands to Him, if I put away the sin that is in my hand and allow no evil to dwell in my tent, then, free of fault, I will lift up my face; I will stand firm and without fear. I will surely forget my trouble, recalling it only as waters gone by. Life will be brighter than noonday, and darkness will become like morning. I will be secure, because there is hope; I will look about me and take my rest in safety.”

You know what’s particularly awesome about this one, Donna? In Job, Job cries out for an intercessor. Somebody to stand between him and God, because Job knows he’s not worthy. That he’s inadequate. And we….we HAVE that intercessor. We have what Job hungered for. And even when our hands are not free from sin, if we’ve trusted Jesus as our Savior, even then we can stand confidently before God b/c he sees Christ’s righteousness. That is something I will truly, truly never be able to wrap my brain around!!

      1. TRUTH!! TRUTH!!!

  9. I love to pray that, “whether I’m turning right or left, I’d hear His voice behind me saying, ‘This is the way. Walk in it.'” I don’t want to take a step without God directing me.

Also love Romans 8:26 when–in my weakness–I don’t know how to pray. It’s a face-planting thing to know that when I lack words the Spirit is on it already, speaking for me with groans words can’t express.

Thank you for this post today.

You and Wendy both like that groaning one! So do I. It’s comforting to know the Spirit prays on our behalf.

  10. Love, love, love. So often I don’t have the words either, a strange thing for a writer!

I love all the verses about not worrying. About trusting Him. About Him never leaving nor forsaking us.

  11. Katie, there is an awesome book by Joyce Meyer called The Secret Power of Speaking God’s Word. You can get it in this perfect little purple book, or download it on your Kindle (I have both!). It has dozens of practical areas where we need to pray the scriptures – like anger, fear, determination, seeking God, walking in Love, you name it. Under each category are at least a dozen scriptures you can pray. I just finished my prayer time using it this morning and it’s so powerful. This is the one that resonated with my spririt today: “For [I] am God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for [me] to do.” Ephesians 2:10

    1. Katie Ganshert

Isn’t that amazing that God prepared good works in advance for us to do? That’s such a comforting thought to me.

I’ll definitely have to check out that book!

  12. That Psalm 19:14 on your photo above is taped to my monitor where I see it every day.

It IS my prayer, as well as my plea for his help doing it, because the words/actions that please him I do only by his grace, and because I know words and actions spring from deeper within, from my attitudes, from the “meditations” I allow in my heart, so those need the constant work of his grace as well. I’m glad King David recognized this and showed us what was at the heart of a “man after God’s own heart.”

  13. I love the Search me O God, because I’m ususally in need of that. And b/c David rocks. And b/c it’s so initmate.

There’s one in Joshua maybe that talks about being strong and courageous. I like that one.

And anything to do with trust.

Oh, and the one about the spirit groaning on our behalf. Cool to think we don’t even need to talk…groaning is already going on for us.

  14. Ooh, good verses. I love to pray this one: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13. I just turn the “yous” to me and I. 🙂

      Love that one, Melissa!
