The Focus of a Levite

They will have no land of their own among the Israelites. The Lord himself is their special possession, just as he promised them. -Deuteronomy 18:2

The Israelites had to be so eager to get to the Promised Land.

Finally, no more wilderness. No more desert.

But land.

Fertile, amazing, glorious land. A place to settle down and make a home.

I can only imagine how easy it would’ve been to pin their hopes on the promised land rather than the unshakable, all-powerful Lord.

So very easy for every single tribe, sans one.

The Levites.

Because their special possession would not be grass and dirt and clay.

Their special possession would be the Lord.

Oh Father God, would you give me that same narrow focus? Be my prized possession. My ultimate goal and my ultimate reward. Lord Jesus, I want You, and You alone, to take first place in my heart.

Let’s Talk: What have you been gleaning from the Bible these days?

  1. Hey Katie,

Great call to arms – thank you.

I’m starting a new series on my blog called Ministry or Malarkey and its all about using Christian fiction (malarkey) to further God’s kingdom (ministry). Learning about how Jesus used fiction has been a lot of fun for me – has totally helped me to relate to Him on another level.

    Blessings!

  2. Ruth,

I’m working at VBS this week, too. Today I had the awesome experience of praying with a child who accepted Christ as her Savior. God is at work, drawing people to Him. For the rest of her life, that girl will know God and His love. How amazing is that?

  3. Am teaching the creation account in Genesis to a group of kids at VBS this week. It’s been so fun to read through these verses again. God is revealing to me how important it is to have the Biblical worldview as opposed to the secular worldview.

Always good to be reminded of His AWESOMENESS!!

    Blessings,
    Ruth

  4. I have a pile of index cards — and I do mean a pile of ’em — that is filled with different Scripture verses. The one I am focused on the last few days says: May he grant you your heart’s desire, and fulfill all your purpose.” Psalm 20:4.
And the interesting thing is thinking on this verse helps me concentrate on God — not me and what I want.

  5. Thank you for the reminder: God Himself is our reward. Not getting an agent. Not getting a book published. Not getting rave reviews.

    Him, and Him alone.

I actually think this is what God has been teaching me lately. To not let myself get so wrapped up in “doing” that I take my self-worth from that.

  6. Yep, I’m a scatterhead lately. Learning to slow down, trust, and appreciate the small moments.

  7. In my early elementary Sunday school class, we are going through the Old Testament. We spent several weeks on Isaac/Jacob/Esau and making good choices vs bad choices. Through those lessons, I’m constantly reminded of God’s incredible blessings in spite of my flaws and screw-ups.

In worship, our pastor did a sermon series that felt written especially for me. My takeaway was I needed an attitude adjustment…when I console writers about those rejection letters, I remind them of God’s plan. I needed to practice those words in my own life. I wasn’t dealing with a writing rejection, but life hands out its own series of rejections. Regardless, God has a plan, and it’s all about His timing.

  8. I love, love, love this. To pursue Christ with singular focus…I want that to be my purpose, too. My best and most important dream!

Ditto, Melissa! It’s so easy to get side tracked with lesser things, isn’t it??

  9. Well, well, well.
You have absolutely NO IDEA how utterly and completely spot ON this is for me right at this moment (6:53am Atlantic time).
You could knock me over with a feather right now.
    Woo.
    Scary.
    Amazing.

Isn’t it crazy how God uses others to speak so personally into our lives? So glad this encouraged you this morning, Jennifer. You are such a blessing to me.

      1. It’s mutual Katie.
