In Celebration of Breakthroughs (plus a Giveaway)

confettiWriting….

Sometimes it’s awesome.

Sometimes it’s just flat out stressful.

Yesterday, it was awesome.

And that awesome came on the tail end of a whole lotta stressful.

What made it awesome, you ask?

Because I’ve been wrestling with a story that I needed to have plotted (like, last week). The characters were there. The theme was there. Various complications were there. But the rising action leading to that all-important climactic moment?

Completely elusive.

The ever-lovin’ pieces were not fitting.

I was hitting my head against a creative brick wall…..reinforced with steel and surrounded by a force field for good measure.

I was positive I would never come up with an entertaining plot, let alone a cohesive one.

I was certain that I wouldn’t reach my deadline and I’d never ever write another book again. My creativity had officially shriveled up and died.

But then yesterday happened!

After some much-needed brainstorming sessions with several writer friends and some much-needed divine inspiration, I wrote not only one synopsis, but TWO! And what’s even crazier is that I’d be excited to write either story.

So do me a favor, would you?

Next week, when I’m freaking out all over again because I’m convinced I will never write another word worth reading, would you please remind me that God has a way of meeting us most profoundly when we think we have nothing left to give?

I’d be forever grateful.

Now, let’s celebrate, shall we?

I’m in the mood to give away a signed copy of both of my books! To be entered to win, all you have to do is sign up for a Welcome Note and Devo (if you’ve already signed up, then you are already in the drawing). You should see a sign up button at the top of this blog page. I will randomly select a winner this Friday.

Oh – and don’t forget to enter the Christian Fiction Christmas Giveaway! There are all kinds of great books and fun goodies to win!

Let’s Talk: Have you had any wonderful breakthroughs lately?

Katie, I loved reading your books. I can’t wait for A Broken Kind of Beautiful. If I am lucky enough to win. I plan on paying it forward, and giving the books to my pastor at our satellite church. This church is in an area that is struck with poverty, heartbreak, and just being introduced to Jesus!

  7. YAY for getting not one, but TWO synopsises (synopsi, synopses?) done. That’s amazing…since one alone is usually enough to take me down, I’m in awe. Congrats!

  9. Not that I LOVE hearing that fellow writers/authors are struggling… but it is good to know that I’m not alone when I feel these same things. And yes, it’s about once a week for me too. It’s even worst being pregnant and still trying to write. I keep feeling myself that what my body is doing right now is infinitely more important than any brilliant thing I could be writing, plotting or just plain thinking about. It took about four months for me to feel okay with this, but it’s just what I have to do. There’s nothing I can do about how differently my brain is (or isn’t!) “working” at the moment. But I’m FINALLY making a baby! How cool is that? Do enter me into the contest! I’ve been looking forward to reading your books for a while now. They sound just my style. 🙂

Yes, it’s definitely good to know we’re not alone in our struggles! There’s some comfort in that! And I hear ya on the trying to write while being pregnant. I’m not physically pregnant, but in every other sense of the word, I’m expecting. We’ve been in the process of adopting for 2 years now, with a referral last February for a little girl (who I’ve met and spent an entire week with and then had to leave)……so yeah, I totally get how much creative room that takes in our heads.

  10. After weeks of sitting on a blank page and glaring at each other in silence, my two characters deigned to start talking to each other recently.

Of course, now that they have they’re fighting like nothing else and I’m pretty convinced in each scene one is going to kill the other and I’m going to be writing a suspense instead of a romance but hey – it’s progress!
